Sony has today confirmed the three PS5, PS4 games that will be included in the PS Plus Essential update for December 2024. Available to download and play from Tuesday, 3rd December 2024, they are:
- It Takes Two (PS5, PS4) | Review
- Aliens: Dark Descent (PS5, PS4) | Review
- Temtem (PS5) | Review
It Takes Two is considered the headline addition for December 2024, bringing a seriously high-quality co-op game to PS Plus Essential. Having been awarded Game of the Year at The Game Awards a few years ago, it's the crowning achievement of developer Hazelight so far.
In our It Takes Two PS5 review, we awarded an 8/10 score and said: "While it stumbles on certain narrative aspects and not all the performances are winners, it more than makes up for that with its brilliantly fun and ever-changing gameplay. Forcing two players to work in tandem in countless ways, the game embraces co-op play wholeheartedly, and the variety of gameplay and environments makes it a joy to play from start to finish."
Onto the top-down strategy game Aliens: Dark Descent and we shared a similar level of praise. With positive things to say about its tense atmosphere, tactical gameplay, and strategic challenge, we concluded: "Aliens: Dark Descent is easily one of the best video game adaptations of the legendary franchise to which it belongs, somehow managing to be an excellent tactical strategy game and genuinely terrifying at the same time."
Temtem, meanwhile, is an independent take on the Pokémon formula. The game has been updated many times in the years since, but at the time of review, we awarded a 7/10 rating and said: "By and large, Temtem is a well-made, generous monster-taming RPG that differentiates itself enough from the obvious competition. The battle system is perhaps its main strength, offering quite challenging 2-on-2 fights even against wild encounters. It's jam-packed with stuff to do, and its online integration means connecting with other players is easy."

Terrible selection for me personally
Tented is ideal for the younger players that are getting a PS over Xmas. Closest to Pokémon on the system.
Aliens is pretty good but niche.
It takes 2 is a nice one to have over the holidays.
Not amazing games but a decent selection
It Takes Two is an incredible game. Absolutely loved playing it co-op with the wife
I already played it takes two with the ex 💔 that was nice. The other 2 seem alright. Backlog too big though, I'll probably never play them lol.
Couldn't care less about any of these but downloading one of them will get me a fiver of store credit via Stars so (shrug) I'll take it 😅
Aliens could be fun. Kind of annoying to include a 2-player only game.
Wow.... such a weak month.
I wish It Takes Two could be played solo or with a bot
definitely worst month of the year.
I literally have Aliens Dark Descent on my wishlist and was really tempted at its sale price of £17.50. Therefore that alone makes this a good month for me. Whilst my boys will hopefully enjoy TemTem, being Pokemon fans.
Sort of crazy to see a negative response in the comments since all three games are relatively decent and a varied collection. Nothing new for me to play, but it’s a good batch.
I’ve been meaning to play TemTem for ages. It feels like something I would love, but from what I heard it is kind of very divisive. This gives me the perfect opportunity to jump in.
Its a ok list.aliens dark descent and it takes two looks cool.word up son
Already have it takes two but for those who don't it's great fun. Glad we get more later on 😁
Was thinking about renewing my PS+ b/c of the BF sale price but not anymore.
Feels like gamers are dividing between buyers, renters and free-to-play. I go through phases, variety is good.
@somnambulance I agree. I actually saw it as a good selection also.
@somnambulance I don't get the negativity either. This month seems much better than other months this year at the very least.
I think it's a good month overall which I haven't thought for a while!
@somnambulance people are allowed to express their disappointment when games get announced, much like how people express their joy for the selection.
I happy that the selection works for you, I really am. But for me, it is really poor. That is not being negative... that is just my opinion.
It Takes Two is incredible but it really does take two. It would have been cool if they could have had some sort of matchmaking ability.
It Takes Two is a masterpiece!!
Good month. Aliens Dark Descent is actually very good. It nails the tense atmosphere and stress of the second film. It might not look like it, but trust me once you start playing it gets quite scary and panic inducing 🫠
Not the best for me. Never going to get to play the co-op game, the theme is not something I want my kid to play and the wife is not a gamer.
The Alien game has just dropped on gamepass - seems like a M+KB affair to me so will probably play it on PC.
Oh well, can't win 'em all.
These are great for me; I've been pondering that Aliens game for ages, and a local co-op game is always welcome. The only downside will be signing up to PS+ for another year at full price it seems (couldn't see a discount).
Already own Aliens Dark Descent, the others I have no interest in.
I will play PoE2 on my PS5 anyway from 6th december and for the rest of the year mixed up with some daily races in GT7 so I don't mind this being a meh month for me on Plus.
A pretty solid selection.
As a Alien fans and top down RTS, Dark Descent is in my buying list. But i never get the chance to buy it. So, it's nice that i can play it without spend $50. But maybe i'm still gonna get the physical copy when it's cheaper like $20.
It Takes Two isn't in my buying list but i'm interested to try it. Maybe i will ask my brother for a co-op.
Don't care about Temtem though since i'm not a fans of monster capture games like Pokemon.
Objectively, the three games got pretty positives scores:
@somnambulance Every month the moaners come out in force regardless of the quality of games offered! Even given 3 AAA highly-rated recently-released titles they'd still find something to whinge about.
@somnambulance they could give every PlayStation user the exact three games they wanted and people would still find a way to complain
I'm looking forward to trying Temtem.
It Takes Two had brilliant gameplay but some of the worst writing in gaming. You spend your time with two terrible people who are not right for each other and an obnoxious unfunny mascot, and then at the last minute the story tries to rush a Hallmark ending.
Never was I convinced more that two people needed a divorce.
Haven’t a couple of these already been on Extra? As always, waiting for the vr games, plus the retro games which I’m more comfortable streaming (due to save anywhere).
Edit: just realised what temtem is, and it’s been on my wishlist for a while just never at the right price. Happy about that one!
And don’t sleep on It Takes Two, specially if you have a partner who games.
I’m surprised by the the negative response here on It Takes Two. There is a reason why it became GOTY. Don’t complain before trying!
Not for me at all. But that’s fair dos, could be great for others.
Nothing of interest for me this month.
However one man's trash is another man's treasure
Aliens: Dark Descent is a gem of a game and It Takes Two gave me and the wifey hours of couch co-op fun. 👍
More excited about Sly 2, Sly 3 and J&D
I'd actually say that aliens dark descent is the headline here.
I've been wanting to try this game since it came out, everyone has raved about it and watching the playthroughs seem legit claim to be a great alien game.
But saying that for 3 games in the Xmas month, it is a little bit of a let down.
You would think they would opt for some big hitters aswel seeing as though it's probably the world's biggest holiday season.
But you can't win them all and we always have the extra games coming mid month so can't grumble. It's been a great year in my opinion
@Balie3000
+1
It's really not a bad selection. Looking forward to aliens. Was somewhat disappointed about it takes two. The game was unnecessarily long and the book of love was the most grating thing one can imagine.
@somnambulance Is it honestly that difficult to imagine a gamer who doesn't like RTS, MMOs, or multi-player only titles? No, you're right. People with different taste are whiners.
Big meh from me.
It Takes Two - might be good but stuck behind a co-op ‘wall’
Aliens and Temtem worth a play though! Exactly the kind of games I would try and probably like, but never buy, so great games to have on the service.
Dark Descent is pretty decent, probably better than you think it will be.
Some of them were introduced to Extra, I wished Sony would do the same the other way round so that anyone can have Extra access to the old essential titles 👉👈
Personally I thought It Takes Two was disappointing, I found pretty much every character annoying as hell.
The other two games aren't must plays for me, but they're good to have in the library. I can see TemTem getting a run out with the youngest
Aliens Dark Descent is popping up everywhere, first Gamepass and now PS plus. It's an essential for Alien saga fans in my opinion. I'm not an RTS gamer ordinarily but I made an exception here and the accessibility/difficulty options are excellent. The story is very decent, aesthetic and sound design excellent and moment to moment gameplay very tense and engaging. Definitely worth a try if you're an Alien geek like me!
Of course the month after I buy Temtem it drops on Plus. Ah well, it's a decent enough Pokemon clone, so with more people playing it'll be nice.
@ZeD completely agree as a single player only player
Almost finished it takes two with my oldest son(11 years old). Best Coop game tot play with your kids. Need another game like this. Some ideas?
@PsBoxSwitchOwner I’m not sure about Temtem for younger players it’s much more brutal in difficulty compared to Pokémon but it’s still a very fun game
@Blauwe_Chimay A Way Out, Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons
I’d happily give the non-co op ones a spin, could be better, could be worse.
Sweet, I was curious about Aliens DD, will check out. Already played It Takes Two, it's absolutely incredible, you have no idea until you play it what a masterpiece it is.
I’m a big Aliens fan but I’ve never dug top-down strategy games. Maybe since this is ‘free’ I’ll give it a shot…..
I’ll probably give Temtem a try
Dark Descent is brilliant, I highly recommend giving it a go if you enjoy xcom but real time game play. Easily one of the best Aliens games ever made.
Merry Christmas from Sony! /sarcasm
@PuppetMaster
Thanks. Gonna take a look at that brothers game.
@Blauwe_Chimay
Not exactly similar type of game but you are more than welcome to enjoy LEGO 2K DRIVE with your sons. It is so much (non-stop) fun...
You are welcome...
Another recommendation for Alien Dark Descent from me. I liked Isolation and Fire Team Elite but DD was the best for me. It does a really great job of recreating the atmosphere of Aliens and the constant feeling of being potentially overrun. Turrets are your best friends people.
I'm glad I never bought Aliens: Dark Descent. I'm definitely happy for that one. I'll pass on the other two since I don't do any sort of online gaming anymore.
I may claim It Takes Two just because of how good it's supposed to be, but I doubt I'll ever play it. Like somebody else said, it's a real shame they never came up with a way to play it alone (with a bot as the 2nd player).
I'm just happy it's not another bloody sports game in there haha.
Decent selection.
Pure sh1te this month 😬
Some great games. But I already have ITT and am not into Pokémon type games.
@Blauwe_Chimay Someone already mentioned 2 but Rayman legends kind of has a coop element to it as well. Little Big Planet perhaps?
@stu123 If you subscribe to ps plus only for the randomly selected monthly games you're doing it wrong.
Once again, for Essential I think they should have left the PS Collection with all the masterpieces from PS4, rather than treating us with this constant shovelware.
Great month! First time I'm excited about all 3 games.
Would love to play It Takes Two with the gf. I have played a bit of TemTem in the beta on steam, would love to finish it someday. And the Alien game sounds pretty interesting as well.
9/10 month for me.
@ozkrmz
Played the lego one already. It was ok.
@Stale-Bread
I think my son has this game on his switch. Will check it out.
Currys UK have PS5 disc drives in stock for delivery tomorrow, also free delivery
been looking at aliens dark decent for a while but had a idea it might free so over the moon i waited
I've been informed by my son we are playing It takes two, so there's that.
Off topic, the rewards app on my phone is giving the £5 wallet top up option again
Decent enough games but just add to library and move on for me!
Another strong and diverse line up, excellent.
If I ever clear my backlog I'd play all of these...
None of this month’s selections are working for me.
Not even bothering to claim them.
I literally just bought Aliens on Friday since it was on sale, now these ***** say it woulda been free for me in December!? I went and asked for a refund and was of course denied. SONY is ***** predatory!
Saying nothing about the quality of the game but it takes two is an awful choice to bring to essential. Theres a huge number of people who either dont want to play with somebody else or isnt able to get somebody else to play with for whom a 2 players required game is absolutely useless. And that's before the increasingly common complaint of it having already been available on extra. Just a really poor choice.
I'm very happy with aliens dark descent, these are the type of games we usually get for extra that go under the radar and I love discovering so thats enough for me.
Temtem, probably won't bother with it myself, but no complaints with that.
It's worth mentioning that the developers of TemTem have just removed all monetisation from the game, and have rolled all previously purchasable items into normal in-game achievements - which makes the game 100% more appealing for me, knowing I can get a 'complete' experience without having to spend any additional money.
@Keyblade-Dan you still able to get store credit through stars? I thought it was over ? No credit options on mine for months now. I’ve got nearly 5000 points rn that I can’t use
Not my cup of tea, either of them.
Moving on.
Dang! I've always wanted to play It Takes Two with my kids! Maybe it's finally time to get that second controller...
@Blauwe_Chimay
I am glad you experienced and enjoyed it my friend
I still don't get how we get 30+ games a year for <90$, making these 3$ rentals that last as long as you subscribe. That is if you don't weigh in the fact that the price is also to pay for servers, making these even less expensive.
The value is so insane.
I'd be excited for It Takes Two if I could play it by myself, which is impossible due to it being forced co-op.
Hopefully I can find a friend willing to play it with me. I may check out TemTem, never played much Pokemon before.
I've already played It takes two , I never bought it ( or subscribed to EA Play) so we have already had it from Sony , I'm sure it was only removed a few months ago
Dark Descent is surprisingly good, I picked it up for my love of Aliens, and I had almost zero experience with that kind of strategic squad game. Really enjoyed it.
Not a bad selection.
Just as I unloaded my second/last copy of the ps4 It Takes Two. What great timing! 😉 I'll also try TemTen.
I still haven't resubscribed since the huge price hike back in 2023 after being a subscriber since the days of the PS3. I don't play online anymore but don't really miss it.
@ThomasHL well it’s more about having a proper divorce i guess. Actually playing this with my daughter made us have some good conversations about my divorce, years after this happened.
About the selection. It takes two is a
Lovely game, and maybe one of the kmportant games the gen even. But now it is just too late for plus. Most interested players will have played it. It’s been on swifch etc too.
@romanista Its the fact that the game ends with them deciding they're going to stay together despite not really solving any of their fundamental problems that I took issue with. And they're both so instantly ready to try and make their child cry if it will solve their own problems. It makes it seem trite, and I don't think it was healthy.
I'm glad it provoked an interesting conversation for you and your daughter though.
